Helps retain information longer – The more sensory channels interact with TLM, the longer the information is retained. Therefore, the practice is effective and lasts for a long time.

The learning objectives to be achieved through classroom instruction are in all domains – cognitive, affective and psychomotor. Therefore, using TLM in classroom teaching is an important aspect on which you should focus your attention while designing and developing your curriculum. There are many types of TLMs to choose from depending on the context, level of the learner and availability. The next section will introduce you to the different types of TLMs available.
Teaching learning materials are of various types and are classified and classified in many ways. Edgar Dale’s experience is one of the simplest ways to define TLM. He experimented with different TLMs and classified them based on the type of experiences the learner receives – from the concrete to the abstract.
Another widely accepted and popular way of classifying TLM is based on the sense of motivation in the learners, which affects the effectiveness of the teaching learning process. TLM can be broadly classified into three categories. i) Audio TLM ii) Visual TLM iii) Audio Visual.
TLM Let’s look at these categories in detail. (i) Audio TLMs: These TLMs mainly stimulate the listening ability of the learner. These include – human voice, telephonic conversation, audio disc/tape, gramophone record, radio broadcast.
(ii) Visual TLM: This type of TLM involves the sense of sight. They create visual excitement. These can be of different types as given below:
- Visual (verbal) print. (Text is the main teaching or teaching-learning aid)
- Textbook, supplementary book.
- Reference books, encyclopedias etc.
- Magazines, newspaper

- a) Non-projected two dimensional – where TLM is in the form of illustrations. or an image that depicts a concept. Examples of such TLM include blackboard writing and drawing charts, posters, maps, diagrams, graphs, photographs, cartoons, comic strips.
Non-projected three-dimensional – This category includes a three-dimensional representation of a real object or event. It helps the learners to build concepts. This includes – model, mock-up, diorama, globe, relief map, model, puppet and hologram.
Visual (projected but still) – where images are projected or displayed on a screen and thus the view is closer than non-projected ones. These include – slides, filmstrips, overhead projector (OHP), microfilm, microcard, etc.
Audio visuals are TLM assessment aids that use the auditory and visual senses for learning. Their biggest advantage is that they are a close representation of reality. These include motion picture film, television, video disc/cassette, slide-tape presentation, multimedia computer.
